SUNDAY 17TH AUGUST // 'FULL CIRCLE' FILM SCREENING TIMES
// PAST (IN THE CAFE)
4PM - 5:10PM STYLE WARS (1982)
Tony Silver and Henry Chalfant's historic PBS documentary Style Wars tracks the rise and fall of subway graffiti in New York in the late 1970s and early 1980s. At the peak of its popularity, graffiti was as much a part of B-boy culture as rapping, scratching and breaking. Join us as we travel 'full circle' and revisit some classic footage of early hip hop culture.
5:30PM - 7PM WILDSTYLE (1983)
Legendary New York graffiti artist Lee Quinones plays the part of Zoro, the city's hottest and most elusive graffiti writer. This movie is another classic piece of hip hop cinema, full of great subway shots, breakdancing, freestyle MCing and rare footage of one of the godfathers of hip hop, Grand Master Flash, pulling off an incredible scratch-mix set on a pair of archaic turntables.
7:30PM - 9PM BREAKIN (1984)
Directed by Joel Silberg, this is the definitive breakdancing movie from the archives of hip hop cinema, expect Ice-T's debut film performance and see if you can spot Jean Claude Van Damme in spandex.......so wrong.
9:30PM - 10:30PM THE HULME ESTATES
It is 1989 and Manchester 'is' the scene. The real epicentre is not the Hacienda though, the real raw beat central is down the road from the legendary club, in the concrete wasteland of the council high rise of Hulme. From 1992 - 1998 Kelzo and fellow writers covered the Hulme estates with graffiti turning the area into one of the biggest outdoor graffiti galleries in the world. This is a unique chance to see rare archive footage of the murals and the productions that covered the walls of the estate and hear the graffiti writers recall their memories as we explore the dichotomy between the development of graffiti art styles in the area and the councils policy changes regarding this artform.
// PRESENT (IN THE GALLERY)
2PM - 2:45PM KINGS & TOYS
Providing an indigenous insight into the underground graffiti scene, this films incorporates unique footage from a graffiti-driven journey between the main cities of the world. Spreading the word in this documentary are some of the most important graffiti artists of the 20th Century including Futura 2000, Seen, Mode 2, Delta and Loomit.
3PM - 4:30PM FREESTYLE: THE ART OF RHYME
From neighbourhood cyphers to the most notorious MC battles, 'Freestyle' captures the electrifying energy of improvisational hip-hop, the rarely recorded art form of rhyming spontaneously. Shot over a period of more than 7 years, it is already an underground cult film in the hip hop world. The film systematically debunks the false image put out by record companies that hip hop culture is violent or money-obsessed. Instead, it lets real hip hop artists, known and unknown, weave their story out of a passionate mix of language, politics and spirituality.
5PM - 6:30PM SCRATCH
A feature-length documentary film about hip-hop DJing, otherwise known as turntablism. From the South Bronx in the 1970s to San Fransisco now, the world's best scratchers, beat-diggers, party-rockers, and producers wax poetic on beats, breaks, battles, and the infinite possibilities of vinyl. This is one for the crate diggers and all music lovers as we see the progression of this art form over the last 3 decades.
7PM - 8:20PM DIRTY HANDS
This documentary features hardcore train graffiti from across the globe including locations in London, Paris, New-York and Berlin. This film will give you the chance to see the extreme side of graffiti where writers choose to paint trains and trains alone. This documentary features scenes that some viewers may find offensive.
8:45PM - 10:15PM NEXT: A PRIMER ON URBAN PAINTING
This is a documentary exploration of a phenomenon that was born on the streets of American cities and has come to influence youth culture all over the world. Combining verite visual moments and interviews with painters, journalists, collectors, sociologists, DJ's, art critics and other participants within the subculture, the film will convey the dynamism and creative brilliance of this important artistic movement in todays popular culture.
